Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of drugs called antimalarials. It is used to prevent and treat acute attacks of malaria. It is also used to treat discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis in patients whose symptoms have not improved with other treatments. The amount of hydroxychloroquine excreted in the urine as unchanged drug ranges from 6% to 60% median 23%, and 17% is excreted in the urine as metabolized drug. Twenty-four percent to 25% of hydroxychloroquine is excreted in feces, 5% is sloughed off in skin, and 45% is stored in lean tissues. A normal platelet count is around 140,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter μl of blood. When the number of platelets is low, this concentration reduces.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

Chloroquine and Proguanil - Superdrug Health Clinic Chloroquine is an antimalarial. It is used to prevent malaria and it is also used as a treatment for acute malaria. Chloroquine by itself is not recommended anymore due to the widespread resistance to it. Therefore, chloroquine is now used in combination with proguanil for travel to certain countries.
