    Plaquenil and retinal damage

Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.

Plaquenil toxicity is typically asymptomatic in early stages, but over time can lead to severe vision loss and retinal damage. The risk of retinal toxicity was initially believed to be less than 1% after long-term or a cumulative dosage of 1,000mg. 3 The toxicity would double by 10 years, resulting in a 20% prevalence after 20 years. 4. Eye damage due to Plaquenil is not common,” he says. “Rarely will anybody who has good vision and minimal symptoms develop loss of central vision or ability to read if annual screening is done and visual are symptoms reported as soon as they occur so the medication can be stopped if toxicity occurs. Damage to the retina, the light sensitive portion of the inner eye, can occur with long-term use of Plaquenil or chloroquine Aralen. With Plaquenil, however, the most commonly prescribed anti-malarial, this sort of damage occurs only in 1 out of 5,000 people who take the drug for five years or more.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

I just joined this forum but I have been treated for SLE Lupus since 2001. I have been on Plaquenil ever since. My last retina scan shows some thinning of the retina so I am being scheduled with a specialist for further testing and I have been told there is a good possibility I will have to stop taking Plaquenil. Taking Plaquenil long-term or at high doses may cause irreversible damage to the retina of your eye. Stop taking Plaquenil and call your doctor at once if you have trouble focusing, if you see light streaks or flashes in your vision, or if you notice any swelling or color changes in your eyes. If you take Plaquenil for your inflammatory disease, your ophthalmologist will check for damage to the retina in the back of the eye while you take the drug.
