    Plaquenil half-life

Hi Dr V, I am at a crossroad of considering to go back on Plaquenil . A year ago I proposed to go off Plaquenil after being on it for 22 years.

Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as. Plaquenil is very effective for the symptoms of achiness and fatigue. However, there might be a price to pay in terms of retinal toxicity especially after taking it for as long as you have. Given that the alopecia had developed while you were on the plaquenil, it's not clear that going back on it will help that symptom much. Following a single 200 mg oral dose of PLAQUENIL to healthy males, the mean peak blood concentration of hydroxychloroquine was 129.6 ng/mL, reached in 3.26 hours with a half-life of 537 hours 22.4.

If I had joint or muscle aches, I took care of it by resting, Aleve and ice. At my recent eye exam the doctor mentioned I had reached the plaquenil toxicity level and that my retina cells could die (which do not regenerate! My proposal was based on the fact that I had not had any major inflamation that completely shut me down or keep me from being active.

Dr. Fung’s case involved a 48-year-old woman with lupus. Nine years after discontinuing medical therapy, the patient had new scotomas, difficulty reading and progression of bull’s-eye maculopathy. Plaquenil’s long half-life in the body can cause irreversible and progressive damage, Dr. Fung said. Plaquenil’s long half-life in the body can cause irreversible and progressive damage, Dr. Fung said. Similarly, one study reported that 16 women who’d taken hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine, or a combination of the agents, showed no improvement seven years after stopping drug therapy, and progression occurred in six of the cases. 2 Although the frequency of TdP is less with amiodarone than with other Class III agents, amiodarone is still associated with a risk of TdP. Due to the extremely long half-life of amiodarone, a drug interaction is possible for days to weeks after discontinuation of amiodarone.
