    CHLOROQUINE PHOSPHATE, USP. For Malaria and Extraintestinal Amebiasis. DESCRIPTION. ARALEN, chloroquine phosphate, USP, is a 4-aminoquinoline compound for oral administration. It is a white, odorless, bitter tasting, crystalline substance, freely soluble in water. ARALEN is an antimalarial and amebicidal drug. Pregnant patients with P. vivax or P. ovale infections should be maintained on chloroquine prophylaxis for the duration of their pregnancy. The chemoprophylactic dose of chloroquine phosphate is 300mg base =500 mg salt orally once per week. Chloroquine has not been formally assigned to a pregnancy category by the FDA. There are no controlled data in human pregnancies. Congenital anomalies were reported in the offspring of one woman being treated with chloroquine 250 to 500 mg daily during pregnancy for SLE; however, chloroquine has been used in the prophylaxis and treatment of malaria during pregnancy without evidence of fetal harm.
