In very rare cases, we are left with only one generic manufacturer, so the generic is more expensive than the brand name. Supply and demand also happens in generic drugs and it’s all what the market will bear. Insurance companies may stipulate that you get a lower co-pay with generic than with a brand name even if brand name is less expensive. Is Plaquenil stamped on it? Sandoz is the manufacturer's name and it makes a generic and they also apparently make the name brand. They apparently ran out of the generic and are substituting the name brand now. I got the name brand for the generic price from CVS here in the US. If it's generic, they shouldn't have charged you that much! Has anyone here had different experiences with the brand or generic versions of plaquenil? I recently got incredibly sick on the generic version and when I emailed my rheumy he said he had heard of it making people throw up but only on the generic version.

Hi Everyone, I hope that everyone is hanging in there. Back in April i started to take the Brand Plaquenil because I am allergic to Sulfa. I had read that it was better to take the Brand if you were allergic to Sulfa. I was taken the name brand for about 1 year. Then my insurance only paid for the generic brand. I haven't really noticed to much of a difference. I still get a stomach ache after taking it right after a full meal. But I was getting a metalic taste in my mouth. I don't know if it is coated as well as the name brand as someone else has mentioned. Has anyone seen a difference in their symptoms between the two? Sept. 2009 I was diagnosed with subacute cutaneous lupus and was put on the generic form of plaquenil. In June my rheumatologist had me try brand because she feels it works better. This past week I ran out of my prescription.
